Lepe - Introduction

Lepe is famous as the strawberry capital of Spain, and unfortunately its inhabitants are also the butt of Spanish jokes. Lepe is a small market town West of Huelva, the capital of Huelva Province.

A small market town West of Huelva on the N431 to Portugal, Lepe has some interesting features and a pleasant central square. It is also a conveniently useful place to stock up on provisions and has a seemingly disproportionate number of hardware shops and mechanical workshops serving the farming community, apart from a selection of chain hypermarkets.

The main beach in Lepe - La Antilla - just 5 km from the town, is an open-air place by the sea with more than 20 km of sands. Due to 60 years of tourist growth in Spain, Lepe and its La Antilla beach began to become an clear place of interest, particularly to those in the interior of Andalusia. In Summer, the population doubles.
During the Summer, the municipal government promotes many sporting activities. Kitesurfing is one of the most popular water-sports: thanks to the climate, which is conducive for this sport during the entire year - in fact, for most sport.

Lepe’s History

It is quite a surprise to realise that Lepe was founded by the Phoenicians, approximately 2,400 years ago. As to the origins of the name of Lepe, there are as many opinions as there are experts to offer one. Moslem and Jewish cultures were present in the history of Lepe until the 15th century AD.

The beaches in Lepe extend for 8 kilometres of fine, golden sand with clean and clear waters basking in 3,000 hours of sun a year. The coast within Lepe's municipal district is rich and diverse. When the tide recedes, it is more than enjoyable to go for a long walk.

Lepe is a village enjoying many festivals plus a very important fair, the Agrocosta - one which attracts all of the Onubense (the ancient name of Huelva) agricultural sectors. Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a huge festival in Lepe.
