Ayamonte - Introduction

Ayamonte is the burgeoning, tourism capital of the southern Iberian Atlantic coast, partly due to the dozens of long, uncrowded, beautiful beaches, where the sun is usually shining even throughout the Winter.

The fishing port and city of Ayamonte is located in the most western zone of Andalusia, at the mouth of the Guadiana River, which serves as a border with Portugal. Ayamonte has a population of more than 18,000 inhabitants, (which increases considerably during vacation times) and is linked by motorway and bus services with the capital of Huelva Province, Huelva, with the Andalusian capital, Seville, and with Portugal, particularly the Algarve.

Ayamonte typifies a tourist city with its excellent beaches, such as Isla Canela and Punta del Moral, splendid landscapes along the Guadiana and considerable artistic and cultural talent and cultivation. Nature is also interesting in the Ayamonte area. A visit to Sanlucar de Guadiana either by boat-trip on the River Guadiana or by road is highly recommended. There is also a good number of rural, sign-posted walks on either side of the river and in the Ayamonte area in general. Diverse bird populations visit and inhabit the marshlands between the river and Isla Cristina. The sea-faring quarter of Punta del Moral, with its myriad fresh-fish restaurants, has a particular charm.
There are two marinas in Ayamonte-Isla Canela, one of which is situated in the city centre and the other adjacent to the village of Pinillos and is approached via a canal from the sea, opposite Isla Cristina. It is subject to some swell. There is also an anchorage in the river beyond the Ayamonte-Vila Real ferry terminal and fish quays, but landing is difficult from here.
