Ayamonte’s Events and Festivals

The crowded, festive calendar of Ayamonte includes not only sumptuous religious celebrations, such as the all-important Holy Week, but also their renowned carnival events in February, featuring bands of street musicians, musicians, jokers and song groups satirising social and political events at local and national level.

One of the most representative characteristics of the towns of Andalusia is the heart of its people, its hospitality and its cheer and joviality. A great part of that joy can be lived and shared in its celebrations, with the standard of Ayamonte definitely reaching an international level.

Christmas
Christmas in Ayamonte is celebrated in lively, fine style. Night after night carollers and choirs of bell-ringers throng the streets. At long last, the 5th of January, the most eagerly-awaited day amongst the children arrives when they can not only thrill to the splendid Three Kings Cavalcade, when local public personalities disguise themselves with infantile faces, but also their day of Nativity gifts.

Carnival
During the month of February, our streets are full of colour, welcoming the arrival of the carnivals, the Celebration of the Joy, with their bands of street musicians, jokers and song groups satirising social and political events at local and national level. The Ayamontinos join in the street parades, leaving their houses disguised for the occasion. The main event of these celebrations is the cavalcade, with its spectacular floats, that unites our locality with the thousands of visitors.

Holy Week
In the month of April, art and devotion combine during the commemoration of Easter with more than 500 years of tradition in Ayamonte’s history. Impressive Baroque statues are marched past in the silence of thousands of visitors. The quality and the roots of these traditional celebrations have earned them the accolade of Celebrations of National Tourist Interest.

Romerias - Pilgrimages
In the month of May, the romeros (pilgrims) dust off the aperos (finery) of their horses and carriages to make their pilgrimage. Romeria implies a co-existence between hundreds of people, in direct bonding with the environment, along with the healthy intention to amuse themselves and to enjoy the moment. Of particular interest are the Romerias of Cruces del Mayo (Crosses of May Pilgrimage) and the participation of neighbouring towns and villages, and visitors alike, in the world-famous Romeria of El Rocio.

San Antonio Festival
The marine quarter of Punta Moral dresses in its best finery on the 13th of June to celebrate San Antonio de Padua. Among the activities organised for the event, the traditional cucaña (greasy pole), the popular verbena (open air dancing) and the touching moment when the saint takes to the sea to bless the district stand out.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen
Isla Canela, one of the oldest quarters of Ayamonte, also celebrates its patron, the Virgin of Carmen in June. Apart from numerous cultural activities and sport, the chief celebration is the procession of the virgin. Seafarers carry the image on their shoulders from the hermitage to the fishing quarter, submerging up to the chest in the Guadiana River.

El Salvador
The inhabitants of the oldest Ayamonte district of "La Villa" Vista don their best finery at the beginning of August to celebrate its patron, Our Lord and Saviour. The streets are transformed into a spectacle of lights and colour for this festival in which the residents participate by adorning their homes with flowerpots full of multi-coloured flowers, adding to the charm and period beauty of these highest streets of our locality. One of the highlights is the traditional donkey race and the warm Summer evenings during which thousands of people congregate convivially under a starry canopy.

Las Angustias
In September the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias - Our Lady of the Anguishes - involve all Ayamontinos, even those who, due to circumstances, live far from our city. On September 8, the main day of the celebrations, thousands gather for the procession of their patron saint, including those from the neighbouring Algarve united by their devotion to this saint. Again, the celebrations include many pleasurable activities: sport competitions, painting and photography exhibitions and performances by artists of recognised prestige.
